Night Vision Operator Pistol / Carbine Course

This 16-hour course is restricted to only members of Law Enforcement. The program will advance the individual’s capability on carbine and pistol marksmanship skills while operating with IR Laser and under Night Vision Devices.

Skillsets will be developed throughout a series of progressive performance measures and building blocks focused on the weapon set up and zero, principles of the threat engagement and reduction, fundamental accuracy application, mindset under stress, situational observation, and execution methodologies. Critical weapon fundamentals will be applied on the manipulation of IR laser settings while placing low-percentage shots, IR laser to white light usage, transition and pistol shooting with white-light or through NVGs, and loadout/kit management procedures.

The Officer / Tac-team will be advanced in their individual and collective skillsets if faced with a threat/s during high-risk warrants, crisis, active shooter, etc. Individuals will leave will knowledge on advancing and maintaining their NVG Marksmanship Program on accuracy, drills, scenarios, and SOP development.

2-Day Program and Course Objectives:

  • NVG mounting configurations, helmet set-up, inspection and care, storage and transportation, environmental usage, and contingency considerations
  • Overview of NVG models, image intensifier projections, and IR lasers: how it works and why
  • Night Operations and low-light mindset development: proactive vs reactive upon immediate threat/s. Having control of your sector during periods of darkness
  • IR laser mounting, various zero methods: converging vs parallel, and laser dial manipulation and hand control methods
  • Contingency thought process on body armor and kit set up: principle/SOP vs shooter solution
  • Carbine and pistol safe handling skills during low-light and no-light
  • Weapon fundamental grouping application carbine/pistol on low percentage targets, and weapon mechanics/motor-skills development
  • Various carbine and pistol carry configurations: IR laser/white light
  • Grouping drills at known distances: understanding proper sight pictures and hold-offs with IR laser, trigger manipulation, support arm control methods, proper muscular tension holds for recoil management purposes
  • Precision shot accuracy drills focused on low percentage shots: IR laser hold offs and pistol sight picture with white-light or through NVG
  • Moving and shooting and support arm control methods for carbine and IR laser
  • Barricade occupation and clearance methods: hasty vs deliberate under low-light/no-light
  • Target transition/multi-threat engagement methods
  • Speed reload techniques/tac-mag reloads and threat follow-through
  • Multi-threat engagement stress drills
  • Various body positions determined by assessment, situation, points of contact for increased stabilization during engagements
  • Carbine and pistol weapon malfunction clearance procedures and threat follow through under periods of darkness
  • Weapon transition and threat follow though with pistol white light or through NVGs
  • Carbine and pistol laser to light manipulation techniques and proper hand placement
  • Multi-round/cadence fire with support arm management control methods for carbine and proper grip management of pistol: sight tracking on recoil with IR laser, optics, and iron sights
  • Three-dimensional thought application while scanning and moving with IR flood light
  • Target discrimination: laser/white light scanning techniques
  • Environmental considerations and familiarization on NVG performance with surrounding ambient bright light
  • Critical task evaluation development
  • Focal cognitive drills

Required Equipment:

  • 600 carbine rounds
  • 300 pistol rounds
  • Functioning carbine system or duty carbine
  • Functioning pistol or duty pistol
  • Carbine mounted tac-light and pistol mounted tac-light
  • IR laser system with adjustment dials and IR floodlight: ATPIAL, NGAL, DBAL, MAWL-DA, etc.
  • Lens dry wipes and q-tips (none will be provided to clean your IR laser / NVG lenses if getting dirty or wet)
  • Clear and tinted lenses eye protection (must have clear lenses for night training block)
  • Hearing protection (electronic noise canceling most recommended)
  • Carbine sling: two-point or single-point
  • Carbine belt and pistol magazine carrier (must be able to hold a minimum of two pistol magazines and one carbine magazine)
  • Carbine magazine chest rig, armor carrier (optional)
  • Pistol holster: drop leg, OWB, or chest rig (SERPA holsters not allowed)
  • 5 functional carbine and 5 functional pistol magazines
  • Spare batteries for NVG, IR laser, and mounted optics (recommend lithium spare batteries are brought. None will be provided)
  • Weapon lubricant and cleaning kit
  • Folding or camping chair (optional)
  • Water and snacks
  • Tools for your laser, optics, and accessories
  • Motivation and determination
